South West Birds

South-west birds’ panels these stained glass panels were commissioned for a century old house in Cottesloe, W.A...

The birds depicted are all originally from the area, some are now quite rare. The client is involved in conservation and was keen to record the birds to the area. Some of the designs have been drawn from old prints of the same period as the house.

The technique employed is traditional glass painting developed in the medieval period, using powdered glass mixed with a medium and applied as paint then fired in a kiln.

This process is repeated several times building up the layers to create a three dimensional depth of field.

Journey

In this example the client presented six images that had personal significance two hearts, a rainbow, a boat, a cross and a bird flying in the sun and as they overlook the sea I incorporated them into a seascape and gave them a narrative of a journey. The beginning and completion of a personal journey.

Santa Fe

The client comes from Texas and lives in W.A.; he wanted the windows to have a Santa Fe theme. I combined images sourced from the area of Santa Fe and Arizona.

He has a collection of various vintage Texan flags, so I incorporated one that represents the lone star State.

The windows are not from a scene I have seen, the cacti and mesas gave an opportunity to play with different colour opportunities. The cool colours of the cacti sat well with the warm colours of the mesas, and the shapes corresponded with each other. The vertical lines of the cacti and mesas contrasted with the horizontal lines of the desert.

Art Deco Style

This was for a 1960’s house and I chose to match the straight horizontal and vertical lines with a restrained art deco style combining textures to honour the style.

Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church
Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church- Leeman (formerly Snag Rock), W.A. a fishing village, the first Catholic Church in the town. St. Peter is central depicted standing on a rock with a cray at his feet, representing the cray fishing industry. In the background is the seascape of the area complete with local features such as Snag Rock and local trees. They are depicted fishing from the beach, St. Andrew on the right was said to be a great preacher and to be able to preach to fish and St. Mark is shown catching fish in a net.

Ningaloo Environment Information Centre

Ningaloo Environment Information Centre, a collaborative work with W.A. artist Richard Fry. This is in a World Heritage Area. The building is made from rammed earth and designed to be solar passive.

Each texture was a one-off hand made kiln worked glass piece, representing various textures of the landscape and seascape, the stars developed from the starfish are found in the coral reef offshore.

Once made the pieces are cut and leaded together into a leadlight window.

1930's Picture Window

The so-called picture window was popular in the 1930s with an almost comic-book style of seascapes, landscapes and vistas. The house is a Victorian terrace house in the town of East Fremantle where the Swan river meets the sea.The client is a collector of art and beautiful old things. The window had a difficult proportion for a picture window, the side lights were thin.

Coloured squares were a consideration and would have suited the period of the house. The client wasn’t fussed about the heritage consideration. I dealt with the difficult proportion by dividing the design into a series of borders, reminiscent of decals on china or ceramics of the period. This gave more light to the interior which was a consideration to the client.

Victorian Art Nouveau

Victorian and Art Nouveau I have included a couple of art nouveau and Victorian style designs
